Introduction

Imposition Publisher is a cross-platform solution for electronic imposition, running on Macintosh, Windows, and Unix. Whether outputting direct to plate, to film or printing digitally, Imposition Publisher is fast, efficient and easy to use. It has been used for imposing books and magazines since 1990, and is used by over 4,000 customers world-wide.

Imposition Publisher is unique in its innovative use of program drivers, rather than filters. The drivers allow Imposition Publisher to automatically extract information from PostScript and PDF files. This makes for a very smooth, trouble-free workflow compared to other imposition products, as this information would have had to be entered manually.

Imposition Publisher offers a native PDF imposition engine, speeding PDF jobs and avoids issues from converting PDF files into PostScript .

There is also client server version of Imposition Publisher. This combines the benefits of a familiar Macintosh and Windows user interface with power of Unix, Windows and Macintosh file servers. It removes the need for dedicated imposition workstations, as anyone can impose jobs from their personal workstation.

Release notes for Imposition Publisher are available in the Release Notes file. This lists new features, recently fixed bugs and any known problems of this release. If you want to submit a feature request or think you have found a bug in the program, contact Technical Support, details at the end of this document.

System Requirements

Macintosh

  • G5, G4, G3 or a PowerPC-based Macintosh computer running Mac OS 8.1 or higher.
  • 48 MB RAM.
  • Disk space free equal to twice the size of files to be imposed.
  • Preview function - Adobe Acrobat 4 or newer (Distiller needed to preview PostScript jobs)
  • For mixed PDF and PostScript jobs - Mac OS 8.1 - 9.2.2, Desktop Printers and Adobe Acrobat 4 or 5.
NB The full version of Acrobat is required, the free Acrobat Reader is not sufficient.

Windows

  • 500 MHz or faster PC running Windows 98/ME, Windows NT 4, 2000 or XP
  • 128 MB RAM.
  • Disk space free equal to twice the size of files to be imposed.
  • Preview function - Adobe Acrobat 4 or newer (Distiller and Exchange/Reader)
  • For mixed PDF and PostScript jobs - Adobe Acrobat 4, 5 or 6.
NB The full version of Acrobat is required, the free Acrobat Reader is not sufficient for this method of processing PDF files.

Installation

Imposition Publisher is installed by running the installer and selecting a location on your hard drive. This process is covered in detail in the Quick Start guide in the Documentation folder on the CD.

The first time you run Imposition Publisher, the Licence dialog will appear.

Full Version
You must enter your dongle number, Release Code and set the version pull-down menu correctly to either Studio Professional, Personal Professional or PDF Native.

Macintosh Version
USB dongles require 2 extensions (RainbowUSBShim and USBSentinel) which are installed by the installer.
ADB dongles must be attached to an ADB port at startup to work correctly.

Demo Version
The Version pull-down menu should already be set to Demo. No dongle or other details are required.

Click OK and you are away and running.

The Quick Start guide in the Documentation folder on the CD covers installation and some simple exercises using example PostScript files. There are further exercises in the Tutorial chapter covering many of the features of Imposition Publisher.

Three Steps to Using Imposition Publisher

Do you just want to dive in and use the program?

You don't want to waste your time reading manuals - you are probably not reading this either. But, if you are still with us:

To quickly impose your work, you need 3 things:

1. A File List document (File|New File List).
Then add the PostScript files (Add Files...) to the File List.

2a. An Imposition (or template) specifying the page order and positioning.
You can create your own imposition (File | New Imposition) or use one of the standard BPIF or Stahl impositions supplied in the Impositions folder (File | Open).

or

2b. A Flatwork (or template) specifying the pages positioning.
You can create your own Flatworks (File | New Flatwork). See the Manual for more information.

3. A PostScript Output Device to print your imposed job (File | Print).
This can be any PostScript laser printer, image-setter, plate-setter or any PostScript device. If you are printing to a device larger than A4 (Letter size for US versions), you need to specify the device size in the Device Setup dialog and save your changes (Choose Device Setup in the Print Dialog).

This is the minimum you need to get going. There are many other powerful features in Imposition Publisher, such as the Print Marks Sets and many options in Printer Setup to precisely position your output. You may discover things as you go or you may need to check in the Help or the User Guide.

Imposing PDF Files

Imposition Publisher has a native PDF processing engine so you can impose PDF files without any conversion to an intermediate PostScript format. However, you can still force Imposition Publisher to work this way (the same as versions prior to v4.6) See below: About Processing PDF and PostScript together in Imposition Publisher.

The output format of a Native PDF job is another PDF file. You may need to upgrade your rip to be able to send PDF files directly to it.

PDF and PostScript Files in the Same Job

To process PDF and PostScript files together, on the Macintosh version you need MacOS 8.1 - 9.2.2, Desktop Printers installed and Adobe Acrobat (v3 or higher). You then can treat your PDF files like any PostScript files. The PDF files will get converted into PostScript in the background, then imposed to a PostScript file. There are no extra steps for you to perform as everything is done for you. See Appendix D of the Manual for more information.

Documentation

Full on-line help is available within Imposition Publisher from the Help menu. The full set of manuals is provided on the CD in the Documentation folder. These documents are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. If you do not already have a copy of Acrobat Reader or Exchange installed, you need to download the free Acrobat Reader program from Adobe's web site (www.adobe.com).

Limitations of the Demo version

If you have downloaded the demo version from the Internet or loaded Imposition Publisher from a Demo CD, the program runs with restricted functionality

  • Printing to File is disabled
  • Impositions, Flatwork and File List documents cannot be saved
  • Every sheet is printed with the text Imposition Publisher Demo
  • Random pages are replaced with a placeholder containing the file name and page number

(These restriction can be temporarily overridden. Contact Farrukh Systems and they will issue you a temporary release code that will enable the full functionality. Contact details below.)

30-Day Evaluation Version

The Evaluation Version is the same as the full program except it will stop working 30 days from when it is first run. Follow the instructions above to install this version, making sure to connect your dongle and choosing 30 Day Evaluation in the Licence dialog.

Note: If you move your system clock back once you have activated the 30 day evaluation, you have invalidated the terms of your software licence and the program will no longer run.

Upgrading To the Full Version

If you are running a 30 day evaluation you can quickly and easily upgrade to a full licence. All you need to do is to purchase the required upgrade. You will receive a new Release Code that will enable the full version.

To enter this new Release Code

  1. Select Licence, from the Edit menu
  2. In the Licence dialog, change the version from 30 Day Evaluation to Studio Professional, PDF Native or Personal Professional, depending on which purchased
  3. Enter the release code you have been given
  4. Click OK

You should now be up and running.

Purchasing Imposition Publisher

If you are running the Demo version, you can easily upgrade to a 30-day evaluation copy or the full, unrestricted version of Imposition Publisher.

Technical Support

If you experience problems running Imposition Publisher contact our Technical Support team. Please make sure that you understand the basic principles of using Imposition Publisher outlined in the Quick Start guide on the CD.

If you encounter any errors when printing a file from Imposition Publisher:
Make sure that the input PostScript files are not corrupted. This accounts for most of the reported problems. Test your input files by downloading them directly to your RIP or, if you have Adobe Acrobat Distiller installed, by creating a PDF file.
