Installation/Upgrading/Setup

Errors entering dongle numbers or release codes

Imposition Publisher needs 5 things to be present and correct before it will run.

  1. A dongle to be plugged in
  2. The required system extension/drivers installed to recognise the dongle
  3. The correct version selected in the Licence dialog
  4. The correct Dongle Number entered in the Licence dialog
  5. The correct Release Code entered in the Licence dialog

I get an error saying my dongle is not recognised. What should I do?

Don't panic! Check the following things:

The dongle is actually plugged in.

The dongle drivers are installed correctly.

Mac USB Dongles (Mac OS X)
Check that the folder Eve3.framework is present in the /Library/Frameworks folder. If this is missing, run the Imposition Publisher installer as the framework folder and its contents are installed by the installer

Mac USB Dongles (Mac OS 9)
Check that the following extensions are present in the current System folder.

  1. RainbowUSBShim
  2. USBSentinel
These extensions are installed by the Imposition Publisher installer, but you can download them from here.
You need to reboot to activate them.

Windows Dongles
Check the DESkey Control Panel.
This will show if the Windows system driver for the dongle is actually installed.

If the dongle driver is not installed, try running the dongle driver install program manually. The dongle driver installers are inside the Imposition Publisher install folder.
You need Administrator rights to install the drivers on Windows.

  1. Parallel port dongle - run DK12inst.exe or DK2inst.exe
  2. USB dongle - run DK3inst.exe

Windows USB Dongles See here for resolving problems with the setup on Windows.

Manual Install Failure
If the manual installation fails with an error about the %TEMP% variable, delete the contents of the Temp folder (usually C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp) and then run the installer again.

Why is this program dongle protected?

Imposition Publisher is a high added value piece of software. The labour costs of employing someone to strip pages manually are considerably greater than the cost of the software. In order toproect our investment in software development and prevent piracy of the software, dongle protection is a sensible step.

Can I use Marks, Devices, Impositions, File Lists, FlatWorks from older versions of the software?

We always try to maintain backwards compatibility for the user-created objects - Impositions, Flatworks, Print mark sets and Device settings.

However, we cannot guarantee that File Lists will be compatible, because of new functionality introduced in the new versions. But File Lists are related to a specific job, they tend to have a short life span and are not too difficult to recreate.

I have a new Mac with no ADB port but an old ADB dongle. Can I use Imposition Publisher?

Imposition Publisher X on Mac OS X needs a USB dongles.

Imposition Publisher 4.6 supports USB dongles and ADB dongles on Mac OS 9. ADB dongles are not supported running the Classic environment under Mac OS X.

If you currently have an ADB dongle, contact your dealer, or Farrukh Systems directly, to arrange an exchange for a USB dongle.

I cannot install (or uninstall) Imposition Publisher on Windows. What can I do?

If you delete the folder containing the Imposition Publisher installation and try to reinstall, you get a message that Imposition Publisher is already installed. If you try to uninstall it using the Add/Remove Programs control panel this may fail if crucial uninstall files have also been deleted.

Download the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility. Run this and get rid of any corrupted entries for Imposition Publisher in your Add/Remove Programs list. The Imposition Publisher installer should now run OK.

File Lists

In the Add Files dialog why can't I see the PostScript files I created on Windows/Unix/Mac OS X? I am using the Macintosh version of Imposition Publisher.

The Macintosh version filters out files that it thinks are not PostScript, based on their Macintosh file type attribute. To see all the files in the Add Files dialog, hold down the option key when clicking the Add Files button.

Alternatively, just drag and drop the files into the File List window.

What kinds of input files can be handled?

PostScript and PDF files from all the major Desktop publishing programs. And many other word processing and specialist applications. If you find a PostScript file that you want to impose that is not recognised by Imposition Publisher, contact us and we can easily create a custom driver to handle this and similar files.

Why do I get this error when loading a file? "Imposition Publisher was unable to add all of the files. Please make sure the required drivers are in the drivers folder"

This is caused by a PostScript/PDF file which is not recognised by any of the drivers. This could be due to an out of date set of drivers. All of the current release drivers are available from the Farrukh Systems website. You are entitled to download and use them only if you are still in warranty or have a maintenance agreement with us.

Another possible cause of the problem is that the file contains PostScript data which is different from that previously encountered. This might be due to a new version of the source application or a new PostScript printer driver being used to create the file.

If you encounter such a problem with one of the supported applications, please send us a small PostScript file which reproduces the same problem. We will be able to quickly issue a fixed driver.

How should I create PostScript files to use with Imposition Publisher

You are free to use whatever settings you wish from the application, the PPD and the printer driver. We recommend that you print with crop marks, if possible, as this will provide the best workflow. Imposition Publisher detects the crop marks in the original file and uses their positions to ensure that the output is positioned correctly.

How should I create PDF files to use with Imposition Publisher?

Imposition Publisher will pick up the TrimBox information from the PDF file and you don't have to worry about page positioning. More details.

Impositions

How do I calculate the value of creep to use? Use our Creep Calculator.

The most accurate way to calculate the creep necessary for a particular job is to make a mock-up on the actual stock that the job will use.
When the book is trimmed so that all the page edges are flush, the TOTAL CREEP VALUE is the difference in width between the cover spread and the centre spread.

You next need to know how many SPREADS will be in the finished job. A spread is a sheet of paper with a pair of pages on the front and another pair on the back, four in total. For example a 64 page job would be made of 16 spreads (64 divided by 4).

The calculation to find the value to be entered in the Creep box on the imposition window is:

TOTAL CREEP divided by (SPREADS - 1)

Why when I have an imposition open does the Print Dialog not select it?

(This issue only applies to Imposition Publisher v4.0. The user interface was enhanced in v4.1.)

In all probability, the topmost document is a File List and not an imposition.

If you are asking "What I should I do if....", the answer is:

  1. Hit Cancel in the Print Dialog
  2. Click on the imposition you wish to print, to make sure it is the topmost window
  3. Then select Print from the File menu

I am trying to print a Saddle Stitched job, but I get the error "An incorrect page ordering has occurred". What am I doing wrong?

This error occurs when the page ordering in the imposition is incorrect - namely the imposition doesn't fold correctly. Check that you have got the pages in the right place and orientation. A paper dummy booklet may be useful to check this.

How do I do a work and turn section in the middle of a saddle stitched job?

You need to open a 2nd imposition document and print the pages from the work and turn section separately.

What are Perfect Bound, Saddle Stitched - Normal Inset, Saddle Stitched - Web Inset, Incremental and Coming & Going?

These are the different types of impositions supported in Imposition Publisher. They correspond to different methods of printing or binding.

Print Marks

Can I use my special DCS files as custom print marks?

Yes. You should treat a DCS file just the same way as a normal EPS file when creating a custom mark.

When Imposition Publisher outputs the spot colour separations, it will substitute:
separation X of the DCS mark on the 1st spot colour plate,
separation Z of the DCS mark on the 2nd spot colour plate,
separation U of the DCS mark on the 3rd spot colour plate and
separation V of the DCS mark on the 4th spot colour plate.

PDF Workflow

PDF processing doesn't work. What should I check?

Adobe Acrobat
Make sure that you have the most up to date revision of Acrobat software.
Acrobat 4 - You should be running v4.05.
Acrobat 5 - You should be running v5.0.5.
Updaters are available on the Adobe web site.

Mac OS 8/9
Requirements:

  • a G4, G3 or PowerPC based Macintosh computer
  • Mac OS 8.1 or above
  • Adobe Acrobat v4 or newer
Mac OS 8.1, or above, is required because it contains four key extensions:
  • LaserWriter (v8.5.1 or newer)
  • PrintingLib
  • Desktop PrintMonitor
  • Desktop Printer Spooler
If any of these extensions are not present, a warning message will appear at startup, warning that PDF processing is not possible.

Mac OS X
If you are running Imposition Publisher v4.5 or earlier on Mac OS X, the Studio Professional version is not able to process PDF files directly. However, if you have the Studio Professional version and have a current maintenance contract, you can use our PDF Native version to impose PDF files. Contact us for details and a Release Code for the PDF Native software.

Windows
Make sure that a printer called Imposition Publisher exists in your Printers folder. It should be set to print to a local file port - the same file name every print job. Further details are given in the Windows ReadMe.txt and ReleaseNotes.txt files inside the installation.

What are the best settings to use on Acrobat?

Imposing PDF Files - Imposition Publisher v4.0 - v4.5
You need to ensure that Acrobat is set to print without scaling down the output. Make sure that "Fit to page" (Acrobat 4) or "Shrink oversized pages to paper size" (Acrobat 5) is not turned on.

Previewing
You can set Distiller's job options to the Screen settings. When you print from the Imposition Publisher Preview dialog, the actual imposed PostScript file is sent to the printer, not the PDF.

Distiller (Windows) has a preferences setting "Ask for PDF file destination". This needs to be off, else you will be prompted every time you preview by a File Save dialog.

What should I do if I get the following error message?
"Can't launch Acrobat or Acrobat Exchange. Please make sure it is installed on your computer and that there is enough memory to launch it."

Check the following:

  1. Check that Acrobat (or Acrobat Exchange) software has been installed correctly.
  2. Make more memory available for Acrobat by quitting other applications.
You can easily check this by manually launching Acrobat and Distiller before launching Imposition Publisher.

How do I update paths to Acrobat after installation?

Imposition Publisher Standalone - Mac
There are no paths stored - It is a Mac after all! All the work of locating applications is done by the operating system. If you experience wierdness, like no application or the wrong application being found, you probably need to rebuild your Desktop database file.
Mac OS 8/9 - Restart your Mac and hold the Command and Option keys as it restarts.
Mac OS X - In System Preferences, Classic pane, Advanced, use the Rebuild Desktop button.

Imposition Publisher Server - Windows NT/2000/XP v4.0.4 - v4.1.0
At the root of the Imposition Publisher installation there are two files: "Distillr.dat" which contains path to the Acrobat Distiller, and "Reader.dat" which contains path to the Acrobat/Reader. If you have reinstalled either of these programs or have moved them to a different location these two files need to be updated. Delete these two files and another file "Acrobat.flg". Restart the Imposition Publisher server. It will then re-search the machine for the paths of the Acrobat applications.

Imposition Publisher Server - Unix
In the folder '.../ipserver/ip' there are these two files: "ippreview.cmd" which contains path of the Acrobat Distiller, and "ipreader.cmd" which contains path of the Acrobat Reader. You can update these files either manually or by running scripts "finddistiller" and/or "findreader" which can be found in the folder '...ipserver/bin'.

Drivers

How do I update Imposition Publisher drivers?

Standalone Versions - Macintosh and Windows
There is a folder named "drivers" located within the Imposition Publisher installation folder. The updated drivers should be copied to this location.

Client-Server Versions
The easiest way to access the drivers is from one of the client workstations. In the shared volume on the server is a folder named "iplogin". This contains a folder named "drivers". This is where to copy the updated drivers.

It says my drivers are too new for my release code. What does that mean?

When you buy a new copy of Imposition Publisher or an Annual Maintenance Agreement you are issued with a release code which is valid until a certain date. The release code allows the use of all drivers modified up until that date, but not drivers that are created or modified after that date.

When you purchase a new support agreement, a new release code is issued allowing you to use newly modified drivers for another year.

Output Problems

Why have all my separations come out as black?

Make sure that the file has loaded into the file list correctly and that separations have been detected.

If the file list reports separations, but your output seems to be ignoring the colour information, you need to change the preferred colour choice. With the colour separated file loaded in the file list, select the Print dialog, then click "Options". Set the Colour option to All. Click OK. In the Print dialog, click Save Settings. The number of pages available to print from the Print menu should read correctly now, rather than one page for each plate in the job.

My output file does not RIP / Process

This could be due to a fault in the original PostScript file. This would get passed through into the imposed PostScript. Check the validity of the source file by Distilling or ripping it. If the source file rips OK, then the problem may have been introduced by Imposition Publisher. The file should be tested using the latest Imposition Publisher drivers, and if the result is still a failure, the file should be sent to Farrukh Systems Technical Support.

What happened to my bleed?

If you had bleed outside the trims of your original job but it is missing from your imposed job, it is probable that your Bleed preferences are set incorrectly. In Imposition Publisher, select Preferences from the Edit menu. The default setting for bleed is "Bleed To Trims" which allows bleed out to the beginning of the crop marks.

Imposition Publisher Windows
From the Edit menu select Preferences. On the General tab set Bleeds to Clip To Trims.
If you are printing an imposition, then set the maximum amount of bleed is equal to the Edge Trim value. If you are not printing an imposition, then can set the Trims using the Trims button in the Print dialog.

Imposition Publisher Macintosh
Select Options from the Print dialog. On the Trims & Bleeds tab, set Bleeds to Clip To Trims.
If you are printing an imposition, then set the maximum amount of bleed is equal to the Edge Trim value. If you are not printing an imposition, then select Options from the Print window and enter values on the Trims & Bleeds tab.

Can I separate a composite file as well as impose it with Imposition Publisher

Colour separation is best achieved with appropriate tools. Your rip may well have colour separation technologies built-in.

Imposition Publisher has some limited colour separation capabilities, but it is restricted to certain PostScript file types. These are the separation drivers:

  • GenWinSep
  • WordWinSep
  • WordMacSep
  • QuarkEPSSep
The first three drivers split every page into the process colour separations - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. The QuarkEPSSep driver handles EPS files generated using the Save Page As EPS option in QuarkXPress. It is a little smarter than the other separation drivers. It will split every page into only the process colours which are actually present (although it assumes black is always present).

GenWin (Generic Windows) refers to files from Windows applications whose PostScript is generated solely by the Windows system PostScript printer driver, not by the application itself. This includes Microsoft Office applications, FrameMaker and possibly others.

Can I merge a separated file into a composite file?

No. Sorry.

Check with your rip supplier as this is a feature built in to many modern rips.

I previewed a job earlier. Where is the imposed file stored?

The imposed PostScript file will be stored in the "ipscratch" folder inside the Imposition Publisher installation folder. That is, if you left the Destination choice set as Printer in the Print dialog.

Client Server Issues

An error message says that I have too many users logged in. What can I do?

To free up a slot on the server you can log out any logged in clients, from the client workstation. Choose Client Server Setup from the Edit menu. From here you can select Log Out.

Windows NT/2000/XP Server
From the Server software, select Users from the Edit menu. The Users dialog shows a list of all the users. Select the user that you want to uninstall and click Uninstall.

How can I set up volumes and printers if the automatic scripts fail?

Solaris, Mac OS X and Linux
From the install directory, run the config_net script. NB You need root privileges, so use su on Solaris and Linux or sudo on Mac OS X.

Miscellaneous

Do you have a Windows Help file?

Yes
See this PDF file. To use this updated file, save the PDF file in the Imposition Publisher Help folder (usually C:\Program Files\Imposition Publisher 4.6\Help) and rename it to "Imposition Publisher Help.pdf".

What does the error -50 mean?

Macintosh Standalone - Mac OS 8/9
Imposition Publisher was unable to switch desktop printers. Make sure that you don't have any other print jobs running.

Client-Server Windows NT/2000/XP
This error occurs if the server is unable to find the "Imposition Publisher" printer. You may need to create this manually if it does not exist. Full instructions are in the ReadMe.txt file inside the server installation folder.
