Three Steps to Using Imposition Publisher
Do you just want to dive in and use the program?
You don't want to waste your time reading manuals? You are probably not reading this either. But, if you are still with us:
To quickly impose your work, you need 3 things:
1. A Job window (File | New Job...). Then add the PostScript or PDF files (+) to the Files tab.
2. A Template
a. An Imposition template which specifies the page order and positioning. Create a new imposition (File | New Template | Imposition...) or use one of the pre-saved templates (File | Open) from the Custom folder or an industry standard BPIF or Stahl impositions from inside the Impositions folder.
Or
b. A Flatwork template which gangs up pages of different sizes and precisely controls the page positioning. You can create your own Flatwork (File | New Template | Flatwork...) or open one you prepared earlier.
3. A PostScript or PDF output device to print your imposed job (File | Print...). This can be a plate-setter, digital printer, image-setter, laser printer or any PostScript or PDF device. You can also preview the job on screen to make sure it is correct, before sending it to your rip.
This is the minimum you need to get going. There are many useful features in Imposition Publisher, such as in the Marks tab and many options in the Device tab to precisely position your output. You can easily discover things as you go, from the help tags or by using the online Help.
New Features
Native Mac OS X Application
Redesigned for Mac OS X. Even simpler to use. Each job is contained in one window. See all your device, mark and layout options in one place. Easily save and rerun previous jobs.
Job Preview display (Command+J) is to scale, showing exactly how the job fits on the output device and what the page ordering is on each sheet. NB The Job Preview window does not actually preview the page content, it just shows the positioning, the logical page number (from the Files panel) and all the print marks, exactly to scale.
Odd Sections
Handles an odd section automatically. In the Layout pane of the Job window specify the main imposition and then the imposition to be used for the odd section. Collating marks and signature letters are all processed automatically.
Native PDF Engine - PDF files are processed without conversion to PostScript.
NB Imposition Publisher will send the imposed PDF directly to your specified output device. Make sure that your rip as capable of handling PDFs directly. If you get a PostScript error when printing a PDF job, that is a sure sign you need to upgrade your rip. Alternatively print the imposed PDF from Acrobat.
Work and Turn or Work and Tumble option when creating new impositions. The automatic Mirror Pages will ensure numbering is correct on the 2nd block.
R-L Languages Folding Order
Choose Spine on Right when creating a new imposition for right to left reading languages (Arabic, etc.). Collating marks and creep work correctly.
New Creep Option
You can now choose to keep your centre spreads intact and apply creep adjustments as you move out from the centre. Or use creep in the old Imposition Publisher fashion - starting from the outside of the booklet successive pairs move together by one creep increment. There is a control in the imposition window that toggles between the 2 behaviours.
Impose Landscape Pages as Portrait
If you want to mix landscape pages in a portrait job, you can change the orientation of the page content from landscape to portrait using the control in the Page Alignment section. If you have all landscape pages that you want to impose as if they were portrait pages (with the spine along the long edge), change the orientation in the Page Size section as well.
