Imposition Publisher and Rampage

This document explains how the Rampage workflow integrates with Imposition Publisher. If you use Rampage and Imposition Publisher you should download and install two new Rampage drivers.

The Rampage System is a ripping, trapping and spooling product which runs on Intel hardware. Rampage supports a wide range of imagesetters, platesetters and proofers.

The Rampage workflow rips pages before you impose them. Pages are saved from desktop publishing applications as EPS files and ripped with Rampage to a unscreened, compressed raster file. A low resolution For Placement Only (FPO) file is created, which is used for imposition. When the imposed job is sent to Rampage for output, the ripped page data is inserted. For further details about Rampage, see www.rampageinc.com.

To use Imposition Publisher and Rampage effectively together

  1. Create individual EPS files of every page and send them through Rampage.
  2. Add the Rampage FPO files into the File List.
Select the correct driver in the File List.
Use the Add Files button, rather than drag and drop, to ensure that the file order is correct.
    Resize the pages, if necessary.
  3. Select an imposition template and then choose Print from the File menu.
In the Print Options dialog, select the One Sheet per File option. When you print, output files will be generated, one for every tile or signature. This is necessary as Rampage is expecting single page EPS files as input.
  4. In the Print dialog select Destination: File, then click Save.
Select a location and if required, alter the output filename. Imposition Publisher will create a number of files, one for each flat, ending in "_N", where N is the number of the flat.
  5. You must manually add .eps on the end of each filename, for them to be recognised by Rampage.
You should now have a set of sequentially named, single page PostScript files that represent the signatures which make up the job.
  6. Send the imposed files back through Rampage. The pre-ripped page data will be substituted.

Resizing Pages in the File List

There is a page size issue which need to be understood to work effectively with Rampage. When Rampage rips an 8.5" x 11" page, it adds bleed and trim marks around the page and includes this in the final bounding size of the ripped file. So, an 8.5" x 11" page will now be approximately 9.5" x 12". It will load into the File List at this increased size and this will be used as the trim page size for the imposition unless you adjust it. To change the page size, load the first file into the File List, then click the Information icon, on the row containing the file. In the File Info window, set the correct trim page size in the Width and Height boxes. There is no need to set any margins on the right hand side of this window. Click OK. Then the choose Inherit Page Size and Inherit Margins from the List menu. Now add the remainder of the Rampage FPO pages into the File List. All pages now added will inherit the settings of the first page and the pages will be sized and positioned correctly.

Selecting the Correct Imposition Publisher Driver

A small peculiarity of the Rampage workflow is that it is only able to rotate the pre-ripped pages by 180°. Rotating the ripped data 90° (or at other angles) would be extremely time consuming because the page is already ripped. This would defeat the benefits of raster-based imposition. You need to setup Rampage profiles to rip single pages at the orientation that they will appear on the final output device, either 0° or 90° to avoid errors at the output stage.

For print jobs that use pages ripped at 90°, you must select the "Rampage 90" driver before adding any files into the File List. This will ensure that the pages are handled correctly and creep and collating marks will be correct.

Because of the rotation restriction, the bottle and page rotation features in Imposition Publisher will not work with the Rampage workflow.
